about

Mermaid Song narrates the last adventure of Ulysses. Once he has made peace with the gods, and he has returned to Itaca, the hero decides to leave to sea once more, on a secret mission.

When he and his crew are discovered, they must flee on their boat, and then they are condemned to sail eternally, for having mocked the grace of the gods.

Many years after, Ulysses, desperately, seeks an end to his tragedy in the mermaid song. But when he arrives there, the mermaids go silent and the man learns that there is no escape from his curse.

The reasons: having insulted the gods and, even more important, perpetrating the myth that claims the female gender exists only to make the male gender fall into madness by means of seduction and lust.

lyrics

Long time ago I was travelling all around the world.
I had a boat, a little ship called Woe.
She and I and some sailors had to go abroad,
For we had the obligation to burn the enemy’s hoard.

We said goodbye to our mothers,
We said goodbye to our home.
We said goodbye to our lovers,
Maybe to come back no more

It happened that we took action, when we felt the day was come.
And it was overwhelming to see the fire grow and grow.
What we did not learnt that day, is that we had angered the gods.
And one of our rangers saw, the enemies coming from the north.

We said goodbye to our brothers,
We said goodbye to our home.
We said goodbye to our brothers,
Maybe to come back no more.

Oooh!

At that point we fled so fast, without knowing where to go.
And we sailed for many days until we were sadly lost.
‘Tis then I remembered, the feared mermaid song,
And we sailed to seek those creatures, so they could sink us for evermore.

We cannot live, we cannot die,
We cry and cry and mourn.
We cannot live. We cannot die.
We cry and cry and mourn.

Oooh!

The mermaids will not sing to us,
They will not sink our pain
The mermaids will not sing to us,
To sail we are condemned.
